Letter, [1872, January] to Mr. Froude.

Holograph, signed. Addresed to James Anthony Froude, the biographer of Carlyle, the letter introduces Emerson's daughter and son-in-law, Col. and Mrs. William H. Forbes (Emily Forbes) prior to their trip to Europe. Emerson suggests that Col. Forbes could be quite helpful in telling him about America, as Froude was planning a visit.

Distinguished historian James Anthony Froude was born at Dartington rectory, Devon, in 1818. He was the brother of William Froude (1810-1879), engineer and naval architect, and of Richard Hurrell Froude (1803-1836), divine. The younger Froude was educated at Westminster School from 1830, and then privately in the village of Merton.
